Japan takes a progressive step forward as the Supreme Court declares a previous law regarding the sterilization of transgender people unconstitutional. This ruling has sparked conversations about Japan’s attitudes towards the LGBTQ+ community on a whole and the legislation surrounding them. As an influential country in the region, many wonder what this change in attitude could mean for other laws within states of the area. Borders & Barriers: The European Citizenship Conundrum

Word has come from European Union leaders that many countries are looking to tighten their border policies to keep unwanted immigrants from entering various countries. Immigration has been an increasingly hot topic within the EU since 2015 when immigration levels spiked regarding the war in Syria and has recently reentered the mainstream following a shooting in Brussels, which brings us to the questions of how we got here, and where we may be going next?

On October 7th, global attention turned to Israel and Palestine as the Hamas group currently ruling over the Gaza Strip launched an armed attack on Israel. As the two states have launched into a conflict many world leaders and organizations are struggling to respond and express clear stances on the conflict. On October 3rd, Speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy was ousted from his position, following a lengthy deal with House Democrats to avoid a government shutdown, making him the first speaker to be ousted in the middle of a congressional term. Visas Declined: Tensions Arise Following Death of Sikh Separatist in Canada

A three day protest has broken out over the death of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen and sikh separatist from the northern Indian state of Punjab. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had announced that there is reasonable belief that there is a link between this murder and the Indian capital of New Delhi, as tensions have been high in India with sikhs advocating for a separate homeland. For the first time in 4 years, North Korean president, Kim Jong Un has traveled outside the country for a summit between Russia and North Korea, hosted by Vladimir Putin to discuss trade and connections within the region and how that affects their respective countries. This has caught the attention of the West as it could lead to further developments in relations between the two nations, which could greatly impact the current war in Ukraine. The Mexican Supreme Court has recently attracted much attention as they’ve officially ruled to decriminalize abortion federally, finding that the current ruling regarding the procedure is unconstitutional. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently pledged to temporarily pause his judicial reforms due to wide-spread public resistance fearful of a slide towards a more autocratic Israel.
