This has caught the attention of the West as it could lead to further developments in relations between the two nations, which could greatly impact the current war in Ukraine. The Mexican Supreme Court has recently attracted much attention as they’ve officially ruled to decriminalize abortion federally, finding that the current ruling regarding the procedure is unconstitutional. This progressive step has provided a strong base for abortion activists throughout the country, though not without contention in the population. These petitions are actively opposed by India’s ruling government and religious authorities. The approval of these petitions could set a new precedent for LGBTQ+ rights in Southeast Asia, and we discuss the potential ramifications for both India and the region as a whole.
