Big Tech Trouble: Australia’s New Social Media Law
Sunday Apr 04, 2021
Sunday Apr 04, 2021
American technology giants like Facebook and Google wield immense influence over the information we consume. Australia, in an effort to regulate these companies, recently passed a law requiring social media and search engine platforms to compensate news organizations for using their content. Facebook retaliated swiftly and instituted a five-day-long ban on news sources from Australia, but eventually agreed to strike deals to pay news providers.
Today, tune in to the Current as analysts Daniela Maquera and Chimdi Chukwukere discuss the domestic and international implications of the new law, the relationship between governments and big tech, and how these events may affect future policies on regulating social media. Before our discussion, News Briefer Shweta Parthasarathy updates us on pressing news from around the world.
